It's true that many
teachers instruct only from one particular school such as Iyengar, Ashtanga,
Bikram,
Anusara etc. It's also true that approaches grow out of an instructor's
experience with a previous school
(ie: John Friend's Anusara coming from Iyengar). As a teacher, I love
to play in yoga artfully blending many
different styles to challenge my body and my ability to suspend judgements.
Yoga should be directed from
within. As a student you shouldn't be striving to look like a picture
in Yoga Journal but rather creating a fluidity of movement from
within yourself. Can you create ease of movement without falling into
the trap of the familiar--the "easy"? Can you create awareness
and compassion for your own body on the mat? Can you bring that capability
out into the world surrounding you?
Can your practice
create a sense of joy, so that as you: inhale, a small smile plays on
your face; as you
exhale, you're aware of being fully present; inhaling, you realize that
it's a beautiful moment; exhaling,
gratitude fills you?
