There's lots of material written about Pilates and it's creator, Joseph Pilates. If you're interested in the origins and history of this school of movement than I encourage you to continue your investigation. But for me, Pilates is much more than a series of exercises executed on a mat or a piece of equipment. It's a method of movement. It's learning to initiate movement from the core of the body instead of the limbs. It's creating the integrity of support from the front body into the back body. Pilates should be taken into your everyday life. It's how you sit, stand, turn, reach and pick up objects. Do you hold your breath when you're anxious? When you're creating force? When you're trying something new? Pilates seeks to find a way to integrate your breath with your movement creating a sense of fluidity. Pilates is not easy. It requires a strong connection between your mind and your body. This connection builds focus and awareness. Joseph Pilates was fond of saying, "Physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure." Want to create some zest within your own body? Come see what Pilates can do for you. |
